Located beyond the 56th parallel, 830 kilometres north of the international border and 739 kilometres from our provincial capital of Winnipeg, Shelttany Kennels enjoys the natural beauty of the Boreal forest of Northern Canada. We are in Thompson, the third largest city in Manitoba, which is known as the “Hub of the North” and acts as the gateway to Churchill, the “Polar Bear Capital”. We are also home to “Spirit Way”, a Top 20 place to visit and where you can have an adventurous walk with the wolves. Continuing on the wolf theme, Thompson also features the only and largest photo real mural of Robert Batemans “Wolf Sketch”, a reproduction by Charles Johnston.

I have been actively showing dogs for some 30 years and involved with Brittany’s for the last 19. Our Brittany Crocodile Mic Dunn O Dee was my first experience and my husband’s third with the breed. We became a registered CKC kennel in 1992 and were lucky to acquire our first Jordean Kennel bred Brittany - SSBOB SSBOW SSBP CH Jordean’s New Copper Penny. Then on their recommendation we obtained our second girl, CH Jordean But Of Course who at 10 months of age took home National Specialty Standings (BOS, BOW, BP). Both girls were pointed also in the USA with limited showings. After attending AKC events in North Western USA it became clear this was the breed I wanted to pursue. Our third girl, and first liver and white, came to us from Triumphant Kennels- CH Triumphant Pepsie Twist, a very exciting time for us after a long wait.

Our breeding program started with Millette Kennels under the expert guidance of Beverly Millette who infused into our lines our goal of producing excellent show dogs with hunting abilities. In 2005 we once again took home National Specialty Standings with our first home bred male CH Shelttany’s King Arthur – Best of Breed, Shelttany’s Kiddy Hawker – Best Puppy, CH Jordean But Of Course - Best Veteran, and CH Shelttany’s Itsy Bitsy & Shelttany’s Pay The Piper - Best Brace to finish with the most wins for a single breeder. Also on that same day, Shelttany Of Course took Best of Breed, Best of Winners and Best Puppy over numerous specials for a 5 point major.

We went on to several Sporting Specialty wins in 2006 with brother and sister CH Shelttany’s Snydley Whiplash – Best of Breed and CH Shelttany’s Itsy Bitsy CD – Best of Opposite Sex, as well as sire/get, dam/ progeny, and generational wins in one show. Summer Sporting Specialties are a great time for us as we have the best times with our friends and have such great memories from our travels and shows. This wrapped up a show season highlighted by multiple group placements and wins. 2009 would be the year that our National Specialty winner Arthur retired from showing after winning a second specialty title (Best of Opposite Sex) and Best Veteran honors.

To date, we have bred 11 Canadian and US champions including two CKC Top Show Dogs (#4 in 2003 and #4 in 2005) and an AKC Top Show Dog (#1 Dog in 2010), along with titles in obedience, hunting and Group placements. We have attended hunting trials and have legs on some of our Brittany’s but our distance from these events makes it difficult to finish, but our hopes in retirement are to fulfil this adventure too .We breed infrequently but when we do it is for the enhancement of the breed.

Our greatest achievement to date came with our litter produced by AM CH Castle One In A Millennium JH x CH Shelttany’s Itsy Bitsy CD (daughter of CH Shelttany’s King Arthur), which produced four spectacular individuals. Three have finished in USA and one is pointed in Canada. From that litter, “Chance” GCH Shelttany Against All Odds is a breeders dream come true – achieving AKC 2010 #1 Brittany Dog and two Best in Shows to date, along with multiple Group wins, Winners Dog at the 2008 American Brittany Club National Specialty, 2009 Futurity Winner, Multiple Best in Specialty wins and field points (many thanks to owner Robin Tomasi, Copley Brittanys).

We have one more introduction of our own litter of four out of NSBOB NSBOS CH Shelttany’s King Arthur X Ch Triumphant Pepsie Twist. We look forward to presenting this latest achievement in our breeding program. We have achieved our Goal of breeding Quality Function Stability Intelligence and beauty, a balance to maintain.
